A WARM EMBRACE
Kaira Looro Architecture Competition
Group Project | Tai Le - Quy Ngo
Primary School | Mangakounda, Senegal | Spring 2023
Mangakounda, a small Senegal town, is approximately 50 km east of Ziguinchor and 120 km northwest of the Guinea-Bissau border. The capital city of Dakar lies 380 km to the northwest. The site boasts several unique features, with village roads laid out in a grid pattern, facilitating easy access to the school for everyone. Additionally, Mangakounda is located near the Casamance River, providing students with ample opportunities to connect with nature. Within a 15 km radius, most households are engaged in fruit growing, with Fanda village being a notable example. We aim to create a building that fosters a strong connection between people and nature. Our vision is to fashion a warm circular structure that embraces both elements, acting as a small oasis that harmoniously links the surrounding areas.
The school's design is a cross, dividing the front yard (playground) and the backyard (self-study area). This clear distinction between static and dynamic spaces enhances the functionality of the project. Furthermore, the central library space is open, seamlessly connecting the dynamic and static areas and allowing students playing outside to observe this central hub easily. This space is flexible, enabling classrooms to be interconnected and creating a larger space when needed.
Regarding materials, we strive to propose solutions that utilize readily available resources to minimize costs. The building takes shape through a sturdy steel frame, offering a spacious span, reusable and easy to assemble. Additionally, locally sourced dry firewood can be processed and utilized to provide adequate insulation and sunshade for the building.
